German Shepherd Dog Club of Wisconsin

A Brief History

In post World War II, with the nations focus changing from the war effort to an era of peace, many hobbies shelved for the war years were again pursued.  Among these was the breeding, training and showing of dogs.

On July 10, 1947 twenty-two German Shepherd fanciers, formerly of the Milwaukee Dog Training Club, met to form their own breed club.  Officers were appointed, recommendation to incorporate were made and a constitution and by-laws were formulated.  The first president was Mrs. Elizabeth Figge.  Correspondence with the German Shepherd Dog Club of America eventually led to the becoming a regional club.

The thirty original members held their first (Conformation) show on October 16, 1949 with an obedience trial added to the specialty show the following year and each year since. Profits from the shows were donated to various charitable organizations and most of the money was used to aid the blind in obtaining guide dogs and to help finance the training of these dogs.

Most of the training and club activities were held in Pleasant Valley Park but as the area developed the club realized they would need to find another area in which to train.

In the spring of 1957 a four-acre parcel of land was obtained and a 200 x 300 ft training field was laid out. With the profits from hosting the first combined National Specialty Show and National Specialty Obedience Trial (429 dogs entered!!) and a small mortgage, the grounds were developed including lighting, parking lot, and a 30 x 40 ft concrete block building.  There were no amenities; no running water, no toilette facilities and training was outdoors all year round.

There were many difficulties over the ensuing years including: property development, maintenance and the eventual buy out of the property by the State Highway Commission and subsequent search for a new location.

In January of 1968, 5 acres were purchased from farmer Boyd on County Trunk U, bordering the new Rock Freeway.  Development of the site began in the spring of 1967.

Beginning with the foresight of a few stalwart members from the 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’s through the sustained dedication and diligence of the present membership, the club and site have continued to grow.

Today with over 200 members, the Club is still active with 4-5 shows per year in conformation, obedience, and agility; a fun match; a club picnic; an annual dinner and awards event; a Christmas dinner; and a variety of events in schools, nursing homes, and other venues teaching about this wonderful breed.

The German Shepherd Dog Club of Wisconsin strives to continue the mission and honor those who came before. The efforts of a great many people through the years, extending friendship to others, helping novices in the breed in both conformation and obedience, gives true meaning to the club’s motto:

“Shepherds—Well Bred, Well Trained”
